Getting the business on the right track
We moved our family from Melbourne to Torquay in 2017, which basically meant starting the business again. This time I knew I wanted to set up the business properly with the right plans for marketing, sales and managing the work.
I searched online for the best business coaches and saw that Tenfold Business Coaching had won lots of awards.
When I met with Mace at Tenfold, he explained really clearly how their way of coaching gets results for businesses like mine. It’s not rocket science or fluff or templates. It’s the right actions the right way and being accountable.
Straight away, my coach helped me get the fundamentals of running a business well.
When a business is new, you have to do absolutely everything. All your time is spent IN the business just keeping the lights on. Now I work with my business coach on the big picture for the business. The goal is to get me completely off the tools and focused on quoting the right kind of work to grow my business. To achieve that, we mapped out exactly what we need to do each month. That has made a huge difference because it’s all really clear and I know exactly what we need to do.
Marketing strategies that really work
Marketing was a major area I knew I needed help with. My work in Melbourne had been from word of mouth, I had never had to do any marketing. When I moved to Torquay, I had to start from scratch. Mace used Tenfold’s marketing and sales strategies and they got results straight away.
He showed me how to go after the right kind of work. We worked on quoting and smart ways to follow up and how to look a lot more professional doing it.
I picked up good quality jobs at good margins. That meant that I was able to hire more plumbers and grow my business.
Job profitability
Before coaching, I wasn’t sure which jobs were making good money and which jobs were losing money. Mace showed me how to track job profit so I can see how much money I make on every job. It also helps to know which jobs don’t make as much money so I can manage them more tightly. (Or avoid them in the future!)
He helped me with using Simpro, which I didn’t know much about before starting coaching. It has just made things easier. I’ve now got the confidence to plan our pipeline and keep my guys busy.
I don’t have to worry about working out what materials go down on what jobs, or how many hours and all that type of thing.
Getting that right means that now I have time to work ON my business not IN my business.
I realise now that a good business does more than just pay your wage each week – it actually gives you the future you want.
