COVID-19 Business Continuity – 27th October

I’m here with the COVID-19 continuity update for Australian businesses on 27th October.

There’s great news for many Victorian businesses from the recent announcements on easing of restrictions. From tomorrow (Wednesday 28 October) workplaces will no longer need to be on the permitted work list to open. The ability to work will change to, “if you can work from home, you must work from home.”

(It should be noted that there are still restrictions on some niche sectors such as gyms and indoor entertainment venues).

The change to restrictions on the ability to work from your workplace is significant, and I’ll go into this in more detail further below.

Here are the changes to restrictions for Victorian businesses.

Changes to restrictions for Victorian businesses from Wednesday 28 October:

• Workplaces will no longer need to be on the permitted work list to open.
• The ability to work will change to “if you can work from home you must work from home.”
• Work permits for travelling for work are no longer required in Melbourne metro.
• While the “ring of steel” boundary is in place, work permits will still be required for workers from Melbourne travelling into regional Victoria — and vice versa;
• The construction sector can return to 100% workforce capacity;
• In the construction sector, there will be no limit on the number of sites specialist contractors can visit;
• No restrictions on reasons to leave the house, however the travel restriction remains within 25 kms.

 

Changes to restrictions for Victorian businesses from Monday 9th November:

• The 25km travel restriction will be removed, which means business owners will be able to do jobs in regional Victoria without a permit.

Changes for businesses with employees working from home

The change to restrictions for workplaces is a positive step in the right direction. I know Tenfold clients have put a lot of thought and effort into adjusting their operations to have their office-based roles move to work from home as much as possible. However, as we have found there are many functions that simply can’t be done if you’re not physically in the office.

My suggestion is to identify what tasks your team perform that they haven’t been able to do properly working from home. Then discuss with each person a day or days that they might return to the office to perform those roles. This might see your full time admin person banking up all of the tasks that are required to be performed in the office and attending the office on Mondays to complete them on that day. You might have different team members attending on different days to stagger attendance.

The benefit of this approach is that you can gradually reintroduce everyone back into working in the office and this will likely align with future government guidance regarding a full return to the office at all workplaces.

This sensible approach also allows you to reintroduce your COVIDSafe Plans and ensure everyone gets back into the routine of complying with the plan.
