COVID-19 Business Continuity – 15th September

I’m here with the COVID-19 continuity update for Australian businesses on 15th September.

In today’s briefing:

1. Victorian Restrictions: a call for more detailed, pragmatic plans

We have been hearing various opinions of the Victorian restrictions in the media; Hopefully the thoughts of Leigh Clifford will gain traction.

Mr Clifford was the chairman of Qantas for 11 years and executive chair of Rio Tinto, so he is certainly experienced in assessing high risk strategies. He was interviewed by The Age, where he provided a pragmatic perspective on the restrictions;
• He is advocating for a lot more industry consultation than has already occurred;
• He also suggests more detailed plans and specific restrictions on an industry by industry basis rather than wholesale restrictions based on infection levels across the state.

In his interview with The Age, Mr Clifford said,
“People know their industry. If you sat down with them, they could develop a protocol. Typically, you’d say let’s get the 10 major hospitality people in this city together and talk it through.
“Hospitality is used to dealing with health risks.

He went on to say,
“I know the tunnelling projects are fully manned. If they are fully manned, that says you can develop a process of risk analysis and a protocol that can work? Why can’t that be replicated?”

Many of our Tenfold clients have done significant work in assessing the risks in their workplace and implemented significant changes to avoid a risk of infection.
If many of you had been consulted along with your industry associations, I think we would have seen a very workable plan of constraints that would provide safe workplaces, yet allow many more businesses to get back to work.

Leadership is often about trusting people to do the right thing, rather than assuming they’ll do the wrong thing. More industry consultation would go a long way to showing businesses that they can be trusted to balance the needs of their business with the needs of the entire community.

2. Update: Permitted Worker Permits for Victorians

If you had provided your eligible staff with permits for travel to/from work (and between sites), you will need to update the permits to extend the dates.

The dates on existing permits can be edited and added to by employers as required. Alternatively, you can issue new permits – see this link from DHHS: https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/permitted-worker-scheme-coronavirus-covid-19

Given that the dates for the restrictions are not set in stone, I suggest that you use a future date that is the most reasonable for the role. For example, if you have a staff member going to the office once a week to process payroll, consider using the date of 31st December 2020 on their permit.
