COVID-19 Business Continuity – 14th May

I’m here with the COVID-19 business continuity update for Thursday 14th May.

The announcement of easing restrictions is welcome news, especially for our clients who were shut down. There are two aspects that I want all business owners to consider:

1. Making your workplace safe
2. Working from home or working at work – what’s best for your business

 

1. Making your workplace safe

With the easing of restrictions, I want you to think how you maintain and maybe even increase your vigilance with social distancing and hygiene best practices in the workplace.
The coronavirus outbreak at Cedar Meats (the current count is 90 people infected from that site alone), is an extreme case of why we need to be so diligent.

2. Working from home or working at work – what’s best for your business

With the reopening of all schools by 9th June, it means the end of homeschooling. And with the possibility of more easing of restrictions, now’s the time to consider your options for bringing back your employees who had been working from home.

I know from speaking with clients and our business coaches that some businesses have struggled with people working remotely, even after they had overcome the initial challenges of setting people up to work from home.

For those businesses, they have noticed decreased productivity and a loss of team cohesion. The experience of remote working has made them realise that the informal communication when their team works in the same space is vital. Their output and their culture rely on face to face collaboration.

By contrast, other businesses have found that having people work from home is beneficial. In those businesses, the new modes and channels of communication they have adopted have delivered improvements. It’s created an openness – better access to all team members, more visibility of other’s work and better responsiveness to each other – that they didn’t have before.

And a commercial advantage that some of our clients are reporting is improved productivity and an uptick in billables due to reduced travel.

Now that you’ve had experience with managing a remote team, my advice is to consider the various work models. There are pros and cons for “Work at work” and “work from home”, and it’s not necessarily an “either/or” choice – it’s likely that there are hybrids in between.
