Business Insights – Victoria Construction Sites Shut Down

I’m here with updates and advice for Victorian businesses.

In a late announcement on 20th September 2021, construction sites including state critical infrastructure sites have been shut down for 2 weeks in metropolitan Melbourne, City of Ballarat, City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast Shire and Mitchell Shire.

Here is the official announcement from the Victorian government: https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/coronavirus-sector-guidance-construction

Our understanding is that it applies to construction sites only, and there is no mention as to whether it also applies to occupied sites that require ongoing and emergency maintenance.

See this excerpt from the Workplace (Additional Industry Obligations) Directions (No 44):

For Tenfold Victorian clients with projects on construction sites, in many cases your ability to continue to operate will be dictated by your clients and how they interpret the restrictions as they apply to their site.

The advice from our business coaches is that contractors can help their principal contractor or client to interpret with the information provided in this briefing, however ultimately, it’ll be up to the principal/client as to whether they judge themselves to be operating a construction site or not.

Make safe

You can go to sites to make them safe over the coming days. There is no specified limit of days for make safe activity.

See this excerpt from the Workplace (Additional Industry Obligations) Directions (No 44):

Managing your workforce and pays

As this is a government enforced shutdown, you may be able to stand down your team members who cannot attend construction sites. I have included a copy of a stand down letter for your reference and use.

The COVID-19 Disaster Payment is available for team members who have lost paid hours. See: https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/individuals/services/centrelink/covid-19-disaster-payment-victoria

Friday is a public holiday in Victoria, so even though you may have employees on stand down, you will still have to pay the public holiday.

Speak with your Tenfold business coach about any questions or concerns you have. At Tenfold we’re endeavouring to do everything we can to keep our clients operational within the boundaries of the public health orders.
