COVID-19 Business Continuity – 19th May

I’m here with the COVID-19 business continuity update on Tuesday 19th May.

In today’s update: More information on the Victorian Government Stimulus package

I’m keenly looking for more details about the specific projects that the Victorian government’s $2.7 billion stimulus package will be invested in. If your forecast workload is impacted by COVID-19 these are new opportunities specifically funded to keep small businesses operating. Act quickly to get a contract as part of this stimulus.

Selected projects
The focus is on projects that can kick off quickly – within weeks – and that will generate employment within small-medium businesses.

For Tenfold clients and other small to medium size business that this relates to, the advantage will go to first movers – that is, businesses that are ready to pick up tools and start immediately.

Businesses that are successful in winning stimulus work will be expected to employ new staff through the government’s Working For Victoria website. This is the resource pool of people who are out of work due to the COVID-19 crisis.

See this quote from Dan Andrews:

The high level overview of projects that have been broadly flagged for investment are:

Vic Gov Stimulus Package chart 19052020

Social housing: $500 million
– 168 new build houses and units
– Upgrades and improvements to 23,000 homes.

We have researched completed upgrade projects by the Victorian Department of Housing and Health Services to assess the scope of works likely to be undertaken. In addition to the residences, past projects have also included foyer upgrades, safety and security features, new landscaping for gardens and open space areas, and recreation and play areas. That means there will be work available for businesses that specialise in:

  • Painting
  • Plastering
  • Plumbing
  • Electrical
  • General carpentry
  • Re-carpeting
  • Landscaping and gardening
  • Concreting

The main point I want to make here is that there will be work for those ready to do it. Work with your Tenfold business coach to make sure you’re in the right place at the right time.

Education infrastructure: $1.18 billion
– $389M upgrades to 57 schools across Victoria
– $130M capital works at 9 metro schools
– $114M to purchase and refurbish relocatable units in schools
– $55M TAFE maintenance
– $28M kindergarten upgrades
– $10M modifications and improvements for schools that have students with disabilities

Education infrastructure projects will also present opportunities for businesses that have the capability and capacity to take on fast-moving project work.

Tourism upgrades: $382 million
This sector is one of the lower funded groups of projects. For Tenfold clients. I don’t see that as a real issue because most of the projects under this banner will be in regional Victoria, such as Gippsland and Ararat, where the priority will be on allocating work to local businesses.

Transport and roads: $328 million
Works under these projects will be more likely to benefit businesses with experience in civil construction:
– Resurfacing and patching roads
– 300kms of regional track improvements
– Local pier upgrade, maintenance on trains and trams
– Repairs at 15 train stations

While these may seem out of your standard scope, one of my business coaching clients picked up work a while ago doing the PSO pods at some metro stations and that kept him in work for months.

Other upgrades: $100 million
Another $100 million will be invested in maintenance, repairs and upgrades of CFA and SES stations, disability accommodation, mental health facilities and aged care facilities across Victoria.

Planning and acceleration fund: $180 million
To keep the work progressing, the government is planning the next round of projects so that there is a pipeline of activity. Their goal is to have hundreds of jobs of varying scale to keep fuelling Victoria’s recovery and employment. The benefit I see there is that the government is prioritising the kinds of projects that will really deliver opportunities for small-medium businesses and quickly. And that will have the flow on effect of boosting confidence in other areas of the economy.

We’ll continue to identify all of the stimulus measures that get announced and present them to you in these updates. Work with your business mentor to identify how you can connect and win contracts on these projects.
