Business Insights – 5th October 2021 – COVID Marshals required on all construction sites

I’m here with insights for Victorian businesses on 5th October 2021.

As business coaches in Melbourne we’re seeing the changes in the Victorian construction sector have been coming thick and fast. If your trades business has got team members working today, then you’ve done well to get to this point.

As construction sites re-open today (Tuesday, 5th October 2021), there’s a requirement that every site has a COVID Marshal on site when there are workers present. This requirement applies even for small-scale construction.

The COVID Marshal can be a site supervisor or a worker who has done the training. The training required for the COVID Marshal can be done online and only takes about 20 minutes.

At a high level, the responsibilities of the COVID Marshal are to monitor compliance with COVIDSafe Plans (e.g. hygiene, masks, distancing and density, etc.) and update the workplace attendance registers.

For more details on COVID Marshals, see: https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/covid-check-in-marshals#covid-marshals

While it is the responsibility of the principal operator to provide the COVID Marshal, consider what is going to be practical for the sites you’re working on. It may be worth having multiple COVID Marshals in your own team so that you are not beholden to the principal operator’s schedule or the availability of their COVID Marshal to be at the site when you want to work there.
